Saint Omer

Drama

A baby was left at the shoreline during high tide in Saint-Omer in 2016. This movie recreates the trial of the mother for the death of her infant.

"Saint Omer" is a no-frills, emotionally raw production which sets the audience up for harrowing viewing of a tense courtroom dramatisation. The parallel narrative of a journalist observing the scene provides layers to the story of paternal responsibility, maternal relationships, race, and ethnicity, while steadfastly fixed on the all but incomprehensible crime of infanticide. We're confronted with preconceptions and prejudices as the movie deftly circles around what it is to be an outsider. The result is as gripping as it is uncompromising. Saint-hearted.
