Aftersun

Sophie was 11 when she holidayed at a resort in Turkey with her Dad. 20 years later, she remembers and reflects on the man she adored but didn't fully appreciate.

The writer/director of "Aftersun" has achieved something quite brilliant, taking childhood memories and allowing previously invisible anguish to emerge. Even the simple ritual of applying facial moisturiser after a day by the pool is seen anew... hindsight. The same may be true for audiences with the story more fully revealed upon reflection. The on-screen camera work cleverly highlights subtle shifts in comprehension, with each change of frame revealing an unexpected angle. Protection from overexposure.
