The Quiet Girl

Set in rural Ireland, a shy nine-year-old girl is sent to stay with her mother's cousin for the summer.

There's an abiding sense of quiet in this exquisitely realised film, a masterclass in restrained filmmaking. The characters are closely observed in this mere slip of a plot. The dialogue is so minimalist it's austere, much of the story and emotion are conveyed without words, and the result is a deceptively simple production with emotional clout. The relationships between characters are lightly drawn, composed of simple but authentic moments, and convey the pervasive influence of intergenerational trauma. Quiet expressed as an unmuted roar.
