Maixabel

Juan Jáuregui was killed in 2000 by a Basque nationalist and separatist. His widow Maixabel Lasa talks with his assassin years later.

If you're not familiar with the political history of this story it will take a little while to piece together. The background is revealed but the movie is confusing to start with. The tale is one of strong opposing characters and an unlikely reconciliation. The lead actors are superb in roles difficult to bring to life and allow their characters to be sensitive, while the director captures the broader implications of terrorism and just how impossible forgiveness might be. Healing takes more than time.
