The Farewell

Nai-Nai's diagnosis is terminal but hidden to her by the family as they gather to celebrate a wedding.

"The Farewell" explores universal themes of generational culture and language; not forgetting facing death, which is at the centre of this drama about one family. What could have been chaotic is gentle but authentic in its delivery. Notable is the lack of a villain with the exception of cancer itself, aided by the dastardly duo of time and geographic distance. The characters are well intended and kind, who in the hands of another director may have looked patronising. Instead, we're treated to something much more rewarding. Such sweet sorrow...
