The Fabelmans

A coming-of-age story set in Arizona post-WW-2, based on the childhood recollections of its director.

As expected, cinema with all its power and magic is central to the protagonist's story, more surprising is what can be discovered through, or hidden from, a camera lens. The aesthetic of "The Fabelmans" is one of nostalgia. Actors imbue their characters with sensitivity and realism, paying homage to the story as told without audiences feeling compelled to fact-check. The production could've benefited from some tight editing, it's overly long but perhaps nobody dared point that out to the distinguished filmmaker. Director's life is the director's cut.
