"When the Trees Fall" is a fable-like drama that explores a number of themes with a beautiful eye for its rural setting. Blending social realism with bursts of imagination, there's a common motif that emerges from the mist and despair: to run away. Deft performances authentically portray the inner struggles of each character, with only the occasional descent into melodrama. Despite the excess and confusion, the tale remains intriguing until the very end. Fantastical Ukraine.
