A couple with different cultural backgrounds fall in love and rivalry escalates between two street gangs.

"West Side Story" is well-loved, the subject of many stage productions and a previous movie version. The central theme of love transcending racial differences hasn't aged. The storyline is familiar, we know the words to the songs and we're unfazed by jazz dancing gang members. New and exceptional is the way the filmmaker uses light and shading to depict the era and accentuate the building tension. Best watched on a big screen. Love is love in America.
