MIFF: West of Sunshine

A Melbourne man spends a day trying to raise money to repay a loan shark with his son in tow and time running out.

Although an ostensibly amiable film, "West of Sunshine" is set on the battleground of relationships and expectations. On the one hand, it's a warm exploration of the role of fatherhood and how to nurture familial bonds; then there are the difficulties of navigating the everyday in the grip of sabotaging behaviours that come with an addiction. The movie pays dividends by tackling ambitious subjects with an unassuming approach. Sunrise and a new day.
