The biography of Jonathan Larson, scrutinising the choices and creative process of a writer of musical productions who is trying to get his play to Broadway in the 1990s.

Time is ticking and it's never been louder for the protagonist, who is about to turn 30, giving the movie a sense of urgency. "Tick, Tick... Boom!" is a deceptively simple production without elaborate sets, lighting and costumes, reminding audiences that the story is grounded in the real-life struggles of a writer. The songs brim with emotion as the music builds and crescendos in a way all too typical for stage musicals. Boom, boom, tick.
