The Other Side of Hope
Drama Comedy
When he manages to enter into Finland, a Syrian refugee is sheltered by a local restaurant owner.
Set in a country reported to be happiest on the globe, it's interesting that the director chose a droll minimalistic style to deliver his commentary on finding home. The deadpan demeanour of the locals suggests they've woken up depressed and a refugee is advised not to look too cheerful lest he be mistaken as mentally disturbed. Uncompromisingly dry-eyed, this satirical approach works remarkably well. Perhaps we'd all be happier if more political messages were delivered from a similarly unsentimental stance. Here's hoping.
