The Front Runner

Senator Gary Hart is in pole-position to win the presidential campaign in 1998 until he becomes embroiled in a scandal.

"The Front Runner" raises the question morality plays in politics, but never truly explores the idea. Even with the obvious charisma of its lead character, this matter-of-fact account of Gary Hart's presidential race barely warrants a feature-length film. We get a backroom seat to the chaos of his political campaign, but there's nothing revolutionary to be found in its operation. The only interesting aspect of the scandal is the senator's emphatic response, which is an alarming reminder of the naivety government officials can possess. Lacklustre news.
