The Cathedral

Drama

Jesse, a child, observes his family as he grows and his parents' relationship splinters, his upbringing is recalled through an autobiographical montage of unremarkable but typical events.

In a family, there is love, and hurt, and intimacy and indifference, and conflict. There is rupture too. The unemotional element that makes "The Cathedral" worth viewing is how it captures the nature of memories as impressions, vague and at times indistinct. The father is drawn as a brooding malcontent tainting the production with an air of desolation. The scenes drawn memories are made of special events, scraped dishes, the welcoming of extended family members, and tepid goodbyes. Reality bites.
