The Audition

A classical musician at a conservatory tutors an adolescent for a violin audition while neglecting her closest family relationships.

"The Audition" is a difficult story about striving to attain a certain perfection. The struggle of characters grappling with their limits is cheerless at any time, and in this setting even the music is fraught. Lovely, but fraught with the effort of stringing together the notes. The written word is often better for showing people's dark interiority; it's harder on the screen and in this instance does not make enjoyable watching. This is a cold-blooded, unromanticised character study and memorable for being exactly that. Highly strung.
