Sweet Country
Drama
Life is unforgiving in outback Australia in the 1920s, and when a black man shoots a white man in self-defence finding justice seems a remote possibility.
From the opening scene of a boiling billy, "Sweet Country" is laden with poetic symbolism that enriches the history being told here through one authentic episode. A richly coloured and ancient land hosts a comparatively recent tale of social injustice. The breadth and inter-relationship of those two elements are cleverly captured by a film-maker who couples sparse dialogue with accomplished cinematography to bring emotional depth to a shameful chapter of the past. No sugar coating.
