In an imagined story set in 1991, Princess Diana spends Christmas at Sandringham House with the royal family.

The tragedy of "Spencer" is captured by the filmmakers' own description of the story as a fable based on a true tragedy. On one hand, there's the staid formality of tradition, complete with its vulgar excesses and the contrast of a woman constrained and deprived. As the subject lived one of the most examined lives in recent history, it's natural to wonder what this piece brings to the known qualities and shortcomings of the protagonist. Audiences won't be surprised by any of it while gasping for air. The edge of hysteria.
