Maestro

Follows the 26-year marriage between Leonard Bernstein and his wife Felicia Montealegre Cohn Bernstein.

"Maestro" isn't a comprehensive biopic. With the couple's marital relationship taking centre stage the horizon of interest is disappointingly limited, and what we learn of the man is superficial given his chronology of accomplishments and awards. His closeted bisexuality, for example, is often alluded to and no doubt these proclivities were scandalous in his time but do not warrant overshadowing other, possibly more intriguing, eccentricities. Sublime interpretations by the lead actors and authentic cinematography create a cultured tone, a world where cigarette smoking was ubiquitous, and polished accents cultivated. Pianissimo.
