MIFF: Jirga

Drama War

An Australian soldier ventures into a dangerous territory of Afghanistan to make amends.

"Jirga" is an impressive feat in guerilla filmmaking, where the nature of its location trumps all other elements in the film. The country is sparse and oddly beautiful, the barren and majestic landscape absorbing the bulk of the running time. The director offers a rare glimpse into Afghan culture, humanising characters that are often stereotyped and imparting ideals and values that are the obvious mission of the story. Sound council.
