The way out is not easy for a Dublin woman with few options but to rely on public housing providers after taking her daughters and fleeing from her violent husband.

"Herself" takes us into the live-action horror of a physically abusive relationship, a domestic situation where few moviemakers dare tread. This rare opportunity to show the plight of a woman battling for survival is squandered when the fictional plot loses authenticity and heads into fairy godmother realms. It's good to see the family supported to rebuild but the situation is unlikely enough to distract from the central struggle and focus. All by herself.
