Final Portrait

Alberto Giacometti, a Swiss-Italian painter and sculptor, invites an American art critic to sit for his portrait in Paris, but the creative process takes much longer than anticipated.

A biography necessarily needs to stick to the life as lived, a tenet which is faithfully observed here. Sitting in the studio day after day we miss the usual narrative arc that would build tension and interest. Fortunately there is plenty about the painter, his life, and his foibles, to hold our attention - and the lead actor draws an admirable likeness of a man with a deliberate creative process and a chaotic studio. Well framed.
