MIFF: Capharnaüm

Drama

Zain is a twelve-year-old boy wants to sue his parents because he believes they're unfit to raise children.

"Capharnaum" is a devastating portrait of a child navigating the slums of his home. An early courtroom scene foreshadows a terrible incident, and the overwhelming sense of dread runs deep through the squalor. In the absence of his parents, Zain is rightfully precocious, and his incredibly sympathetic and heartfelt performance is remarkable. Despite the onslaught of adversity, this politically charged film still manages to find hope in rare moments of humanity and joy. Slumdog Lebanon.
