The Way Back

Jack Cunningham is on the brink of self-destruction with alcohol when he's asked to coach the struggling basketball team of his old high school.

"The Way Back" has a sincerity problem in that it struggles to find a plotline to focus on for long enough so that we're given a chance to believe it. With so many narrative threads, one can be forgiven for questioning if this a sports team redemption movie, or a tale of addiction recovery, a drama about failing familial relationships, or a tearjerker about loss and grief? There are also glimpses of an underdeveloped mentoring fable. Show me the way to go home.
