A woman diagnosed with brain cancer turns to her deceased lover's daughter, a midwife, for emotional support.

The real interest in "The Midwife" is held in the authentic portraits of two women drawn together by circumstances. The meandering multiple storylines of beginnings and endings would hold little significance but for the quality of the humanistic acting performances. Both women lead fearless lives, ones that look quite different on the surface, and each has her own version of what constitutes living well. They mostly complement and contrast each other, and make watchable what might otherwise be a bland tale. Secret women's business.
