Phantom Thread

Drama

Set in the fashion scene of 1950s London, a renowned yet fastidious dressmaker has his life disrupted by a shy yet strong woman, Alma, who becomes his infatuation and muse.

This is a movie of minutiae. The tiny nuances of a tightly woven universe appear like cracks in a fine painting. These little things, like the tensions between characters, eventually snowball into something bigger, but take time and patience to do so. Even at its slow pace, "Phantom Thread" is compelling enough to feel like it's not dragging on. Aside from that, this piece feels, sounds and looks exquisite; it's a comfortably unsettling experience worth watching, especially for what unravels in the third act.
