Mothering Sunday

30 March 1924 was Mothering Sunday, officially the day servants could visit their families and for lovers from differing social classes a chance to meet for a final tryst.

"Mothering Sunday" the movie captures the luminous and sensuous essence of the book on which it is based. This is a story centred on the legacy of war and the emotions adrift in its wake, both repressed and expressed. Viewing is most rewarding when the plot explores themes of obligation, passion and grief related to traumatic loss. Less compelling is the thread about literary ambition which extends the run time without reward. Sunday's not a weak day.
