Troy and Rose look to be enjoying a life they have worked hard for, cracks soon appear placing strains on various relationships in their family.

"Fences" is unashamed of its origins as a play. Watching the film, it's apparent this story was not written for the screen. Cinematic devices are scant and the effect is a stagy, contained style, unusual in a movie. The oratory dialogue was obviously engineered for the stage, and it is the most powerful element of this production. The resulting emotional resonance will have audiences feeling deeply and reflecting on their own lives. Defences.
